The Why: Lace Up's Pivot to Jamaica's Hurricane Relief Effort

Updated: Nov 4, 2025

Our organization has pivoted to aiding the urgent needs of the victims of Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica. Hurricane Melissa is the strongest hurricane to ever be experienced by the island since records have been kept. This storm has caused absolute devastation in the western part of the island in the areas of St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland, and Montego Bay. Lives have been lost and thousands are homeless. The images that we have seen have completely shook us to our core as several communities are seemingly uninhabitable at this time. Please take a look at the videos we have obtained from those in Black River, one of the hardest hit communities of St. Elizabeth.

An example of the wind damage that is widespread throughout Black River

Due to the debris, the majority of roads are completely impassable right now, making the delivery of aid almost impossible at this time. Many have lost crops, livestock, and basic necessities from the flooding, making an already dire situation worse.

A view of the utter destruction caused by Hurricane Melissa. Imagine the strength of the wind required to uproot light poles and power lines. It's truly remarkable that anybody survived, which speaks to the resilience of the Jamaican people.

The flood waters have yet to recede so many aren't able to sleep on solid ground and have been forced to make shelter on muddy ground.

The conditions should improve as far as the flooding, but many will be in desperate need for cleaning supplies to clean what's left of their homes as the mud will be extremely difficult to remove.

It is sure to be a long road ahead to recovery, but with your help and our network of organizations on the ground, we can play a pivotal role in the return to normalcy for so many Jamaicans impacted by this once in a lifetime tragedy. Thank you in advance for your support and let's keep Jamaica in our thoughts and prayers.
